The William Sharpless Jackson in 1875. Contributed to magazines over signature H.H. Author of Verses (1870), Sonnets and Lyrics (1886), the novels Mercy Philbrick's Choice (1876), Hetty's Strange History (1877),  Ramona (1884) and A Century of Dishonor (1881). Which was a document recording government wrongs in dealing with Indians, which resulted in her appointment (1882) as special commissioner to investigate conditions among the Mission Indians of California.
